Compositions: All

The content in this section helps you explore my compositions by genre, get detailed information on each piece of music, learn how to purchase music, and get instructions for interpreting and performing my music as I intend. If you have a specific question about a composition, contact me and I will do my best to provide a quick answer. Your content — comments, reviews, copies of programs, photos, information about recordings, clippings of media coverage, etc. — is valuable to me, so contact me for ways to send.

Interpreting & Performing My Music

  1. Please follow metronome markings precisely! I do a great deal of listening to the music (using Finale playback) during the composition process, and these markings are very accurate indications of my intentions.
  2. Any notes tied over to 8th notes are to be held for the full added duration and cut off in the rest. I do not follow the British practice of cutting off on the tied-over note.

  3. The dynamic indications in my choral and organ music refer to the position of the Swell box, not to the amount of stops to be pulled. This explains why an indication for a hefty Swell registration might also be marked piano or pianissimo. If I intend for a gradual build-up or removal of stops, it will be indicated specifically in the score.
  4. "Baroque legato" indications mean that the articulation I would like is similar to the post Harold Vogel way of playing early music, including note values according to their placement in the measure (strong beats longer, weaker beats shorter, etc.) "Very legato" indicates an overlapped legato, similar to how one would play French and English music from the Romantic and post-Romantic periods.

Navigating the Compositions Pages

  • The expanded left-hand menu for compositions goes to lists filtered by genre (Choral, Organ, etc.)
  • Detail pages for compositions include background information, corrections for known errors, and performance notes — they're being published as they are completed and are also periodically updated with new content.
  • Title or Sub-title links go to detail pages.

Adam Lay Ybounden

Text: Anonymous English Carol, 15th Century

SATB Choir and Organ

This anthem works well in a Lessons and Carols service as a response to the First Lesson. It's very effective (and easy!) and will save rehearsal time for other, more difficult, works.

Alepun

"Mary rides the mountain pathway, alepun."

Text: Spanish Carol, tr. Eleanor Walker

Unison Treble Choir and Organ

This rhythmic and colorful setting of a charming Spanish carol will quickly become a favorite of your own children choristers, as it has of young singers in churches, schools, and community choruses across the USA.

"The excellent translation by Eleanor Walker and the rhythmic, driving accompaniment make this piece an excellent addition to any choir library."  — Pastoral Music Notebook

All Glory, Laud, and Honor

"All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King!"

Text: Theodulph of Orleans, tr. John Mason Neale

Tune: St. Theodulph, Melchior Teschner

Festive Processional on "All Glory, Laud, and Honor"

Congregation, SATB Choir (optional Children's Choir), Trumpet, and Organ

The introduction and interlude for trumpet and organ, as well as the choral setting of two stanzas of text not found in American hymnals, help make this hymn concertato a fresh and unique beginning of the services of Holy Week.

"This is a processional anthem of tremendous proportions, in high festive mode…Variety resides in every verse, and the whole is neatly packaged so that transitions work well and will not confuse the congregation."  — Choral Journal

All Saints

"As grains of sand, as stars, as drops of dew"

Text: Christina Rossetti (1830–1894)

SATB Choir and Organ

This setting of one of Christina Rossetti's most profoundly-beautiful poems will quickly become a perennial favorite of choirs and congregations alike for celebrations of All Saints and All Souls, and other memorial liturgies throughout the year.

When Music Wakes My Sleeping Heart

A Hymn Concertato on an Original Tune Appleton

Text: Delores Dufner, OSB

Congregation, SATB Choir, Brass Quintet, Timpani, and Organ. (May also be performed with one Trumpet and Organ.)

This hymn and setting make a great alternative to Pratt Green's When In Our Music God Is Glorified (Engleberg). Though the tune looks tricky, it's actually very easy to sing!

"Martinson's new hymn, When Music Wakes My Sleeping Heart, commissioned for the convention, was a particular highlight—full of majestic sweep and innovative harmonies."  — The American Organist

The Invitation

"Come ye hither all"

Text: George Herbert (1593–1632)

SATB Choir and Organ

George Herbert's six-stanza poem, whose ideas are as fresh for the mission of the church in our own time as they were for his own 17th-century world, provides the text for this soaring anthem appropriate for Holy Communion, community, and inclusion: "Lord, I have invited all, and I shall still invite, still call to thee: for it seems but just and right in my sight, where is all, there all should be."

There Is No Rose

Text: Anonymous English Carol, 15th century

SATB Choir, a capella

This new take on one of the favorite texts for Christmas, is both my most widely-recorded piece, and one of the most frequently-performed of my works for SATB choir. If you have not sung it yet, you are missing out!

"Joel Martinson writes here for a competent choir. The vocal writing is very skillful…The style is tonal but reasonably challenging, and there is a nice plasticity of rhythm in the setting of the words…Recommended."  — Music Teacher (UK)

Transfiguration

"We Have Come at Christ's Own Bidding"

Text: Carl P. Daw, Jr.

Unison with Soprano Descant and Organ

This best-selling octavo is a prime example of how successful a composition can be which fills a void in the corpus of liturgical repertoire. Carl Daw's text is perfect for all celebrations of the Transfiguration story, as well as for any "true worship" services of the twenty-first century Christian congregation.

"…The congregation sang the new tune very well. It is going to be a favorite very soon, and that's obvious. Thank you for writing 'Transfiguration' for us. I feel that it makes a special link between you and people of this parish."  — Terence C. Roper

When the Morning Stars Together

Wide, Wide In the Rose's Side

Text: Kenneth Patchen

SATB Choir with Soprano Solo, a cappella

"A novelty — a setting for church use of a text by a truly major modern American poet, in this case Kenneth Patchen. With no great performing or listening difficulties, this piece would be a pleasure to sing and to hear. Tender, sensitive writing, and the kind of modern composing congregations and audiences immediately appreciate and enjoy."  — The Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians
