Performer

I am privileged to have been invited to share my skills as Recitalist, Composer, presenter of Hymn Festivals, and Conductor for churches, conventions, and conferences throughout the US. Sometimes these performances have been in conjunction with workshops for AGO chapters and other regional gatherings of musicians. The lines between "Meet the Composer" appearances and recitals are often blurred, thus I have included formal presentations of my music in the Recitals list here, as well as on the Presenter page.

Recitals

Along with solo performances of organ works from various periods and traditions, I have enjoyed a lifetime of collaboration with vocalists, instrumentalists, and choirs in concerts. Comfortable on both mechanical and electric action organs, I play a wide variety of repertoire which can be tailored to audiences composed of the average parishioner or the most sophisticated organ enthusiast.

Hymn Festivals

One of my great joys of the last dozen years has come from the opportunity to design, compose, and present hymn festivals. As an organist, I find little that is more thrilling than accompanying an actively-participating group of singers! I like to enliven the hymns with various musical treatments — introductions, interludes, reharmonizations, and descants — and also with spoken text drawn from various sources. Along with the festival theme, I sometimes have secondary threads through the script, for example, in the case of the festival for the Region VII AGO convention in 2003, the majority of the texts spoke to the role of the organ as the primary leader of congregational song, and the importance of hymnody in the health of a congregation. In addition, the hymns chosen for the festival represented the various immigrants who settled the area around San Antonio.

In terms of musical forces, I prefer to have SATB choir, brass quintet, and timpani at my disposal to offer the greatest contrasts in hymn festivals. Usually more than half of the festival is accompanied by organ alone, with me at the console. I write out all the settings of the hymns in advance, so each festival produces at least a few new festival hymn settings. I plan to publish these settings in a series of collections in the near future. On occasion, the hosting body has commissioned a new hymn tune and festival setting to be premiered at an upcoming hymn festival. I very much enjoy writing in this genre, and welcome these opportunities to create new works for the church and future festivals.

"A high standard of hymn and service playing was evident throughout the convention. Organist/composer Joel Martinson…delivered a hymn festival spanning many centuries and styles. Martinson's work at the console, along with the well-blended brass ensemble and lively choir, was crystal clear and full of variety and color. Martinson's new hymn, 'When music wakes my sleeping heart,' commissioned for the convention, was a particular highlight — full of majestic sweep and innovative harmonies."

— Scott R. Riedel · The American Organist, October 1997

"Thanks for the email about your Hymn Festival yesterday! I was there…and just wanted you to know that there was NO ONE there who enjoyed it more than I! First of all - I just love being at Transfiguration. It could almost turn me into an Episcopalian! The music was glorious. Your hymn arrangements were so fresh and varied, and captured the text intent of each hymn. Your anthem [Sometimes a Light Surprises] was another star in your crown. The choir and brass and bells and organ couldn't have been better - same with the spoken words. Thank you for your wonderful creativity and a truly transfiguring experience."
