History |
This work was composed for my sister Anne's marriage to James (Jim) Hancock. I first played it at their wedding on January 1, 1989, which took place at Central Lutheran Church, Anchorage, Alaska, where my father was pastor. |

Joel's Comments |
Originally entitled "Processional for Anne," I began the composition of this piece on August 30, 1988. The pencil manuscript bears a September 9 date for the B section (measures 17-24) and an October 15 date for the C section (measures 33-40). This trumpet tune is, of course, out of the David N. Johnson tradition, and I was very familiar with his works in that genre in the keys of A, D and C. (By the way, Augsburg Fortress has now reissued all his Trumpet Tunes in a single collection. My only regret is that they did not publish trumpet parts for them, as a good number of them are easily played on the trumpet, and that is a requirement for use as a processional at larger weddings.) The C section of this trumpet tune was intended to precede the entrance of the bride, and to be played for or after the honor attendant. I was never very happy with how this section sounded on the French reeds or temperament of the Saint Rita Bedient, but on most organs the texture works well. The published title was hammered-out during a telephone conversation between Barry Bobb, music editor at CPH at the time, and myself. I still prefer "Processional for Anne," so feel free to use that, if you wish. Postlude for a Festival Day is the companion piece to this work. |
